Between Denmark and Germany, engineers are assembling the world’s longest immersed road-and-rail tunnel beneath the Baltic Sea. Instead of boring through rock, they cast enormous concrete elements on land, float them into position, and lower them into a trench with extraordinary precision.
This documentary explains why an immersed tunnel was chosen, how a 217-metre element can float despite weighing roughly 73,500 tonnes, how the seabed trench was prepared, how the underwater joints become watertight, and why the project could reshape travel between Scandinavia and Central Europe.
