On a remote atoll in the Seychelles, young terns learn to fly over a calm, shallow lagoon. Underneath them, a fish the size of a child is following their shadows, and when a bird drops too low, it comes straight up out of the water and takes it. This is the giant trevally, the ulua of Hawaii, and it's why so much of the reef has learned to fear it. It's built like a battering ram, it starts life in rivers (and in one volcanic lake it never left), it hunts in gangs, it follows monk seals to steal their food, and it has been seen ramming reef sharks to death without eating them. On untouched Hawaiian reefs it once made up most of the top-predator weight. Then comes the twist: what the giant trevally fears, and the poison it carries out of the reef.
