The Animals That Took Chernobyl

On 27 April 1986, about twelve hundred buses emptied the town of Pripyat. People were told to pack for three days. Pets weren't allowed on the buses, and nobody ever came back. Forty years later, the exclusion zone around Chernobyl has seven times as many wolves as the clean nature reserves next door. Endangered wild horses sleep in abandoned barns, bears have returned after a century, and hundreds of dogs descended from the pets left behind still wait for the shift workers at the power plant. But scientists have spent decades arguing about what the radiation really did: some say the zone is a slow-motion graveyard, others say it's one of the best wildlife reserves in Europe. Then, in 2022, the people came back, with tanks.
