YUSHIMA 1984. One night in a jazz coffee house, told in ten original Japanese city pop songs — from amber lamps switched on at dusk to a record rowing out into the night. 🌃 Tonight's story: She is twenty-five and in her third year working at a jazz coffee house below the Kiridoshi slope. With the master's back giving out, she is trusted with choosing the night's records for the first time. Between a thousand spines on the shelves and one record of her own, she becomes the ears of the room. A note on this scene: every detail belongs to 1984. Yushima Tenjin is a shrine of learning where students hang votive tablets, and the Kiridoshi slope is the one an early twentieth-century poet wrote about. Jazz coffee houses, at their height in the 1970s, were still ordinary places in the 1980s, and chrysanthemums in the shrine grounds belong to the autumn. No shop, no musician and no record is named — only general words such as an old tenor saxophone. 00:00:00 Yushima 1984 (湯島1984) 00:04:08 The Student at the Shrine (絵馬の浪人生) 00:07:54 Kiritoshi Slope Evening (切通坂の宵) 00:11:18 Coffee and Vinyl Years (珈琲と盤の三年) 00:14:51 Needle Drop Hour (針を落とす時間) 00:18:25 First Night at the Turntable (選曲当番の夜) 00:21:34 The Master's Ear (マスターの耳) 00:25:16 Ask the Record Wall (レコード棚に訊く) 00:29:15 Closing Time Side B (閉店後のB面) 00:32:48 The Shop's New Ear (店の新しい耳) 00:35:55 Yushima 1984 (湯島1984) 00:40:03 The Student at the Shrine (絵馬の浪人生) 00:43:49 Kiritoshi Slope Evening (切通坂の宵) 00:47:13 Coffee and Vinyl Years (珈琲と盤の三年) 00:50:46 Needle Drop Hour (針を落とす時間) 00:54:20 First Night at the Turntable (選曲当番の夜) 00:57:29 The Master's Ear (マスターの耳) 01:01:11 Ask the Record Wall (レコード棚に訊く) 01:05:10 Closing Time Side B (閉店後のB面) 01:08:43 The Shop's New Ear (店の新しい耳) (total 71m50s) All songs are original works — our own stories, lyrics and music, created with the help of AI, inspired by the Japanese city pop of the 1980s.
