Gas is $4.31 a gallon as I record this, the best year for electric-car math since 2022. So I ran a new Tesla Model 3 Standard against the car it actually competes with, a Toyota Camry hybrid, for five years and 60,000 miles, every line: electricity vs. gas, insurance, tires and maintenance, repairs, the EV registration fee 41 states now charge, the home charger, the subscriptions, and depreciation. The Model 3 comes out about $15,000 more expensive over five years, roughly $250 a month, and almost none of that is the line people argue about.
Along the way: why the fuel saving against a 51-mpg hybrid is about $420 a year, not $2,000; why a Model 3 costs $800 or more a year extra to insure and how much of that is fear versus data; why a car with no oil changes still has a real maintenance bill (tires); why the EV fee charges you more road tax than the hybrid pays in gas tax; and the famous five-year calculator that calls this a tie, with an empty box in it. Then the driver for whom the Model 3 is clearly the cheaper car, and her neighbor, for whom it isn't.
