Day 11 begins beneath Forza d’Agrò and turns south toward Mount Etna. The landscape changes fast. Black volcanic fields. Hardened lava. Smoke above the summit. Roads cutting through terrain that still feels unfinished. Etna is not just a mountain. Riding around it feels like moving through a living system. One moment of the day was less welcome: while stopping near Etna to take photographs, my reading glasses and sunglasses disappeared. But the road quickly took over again. South of Etna, Sicily opened into narrow inland connectors, empty villages, dry hillsides and long stretches with almost no traffic. Less structure. More rhythm. The kind of riding where you stop thinking about distance and simply follow the road. By evening, the route had descended away from the volcanic highlands toward southeastern Sicily. Dust on the bike. Warm air. Etna behind me. Sicily continues to feel different from mainland Italy. Rougher. More isolated. More alive.
