If you grew up in an unsafe environment — a volatile home, financial stress, constant criticism, a workplace or relationship where you were put down — your posture took a hit. And most people only know about one of the two ways it shows up.
The hunched posture is the one everybody talks about. Shoulders forward, chest caved in, arms pulled in to protect the vital organs. Your body registering threat and doing what bodies do — contracting to protect itself.
But there's a second posture that almost nobody talks about. The overly rigid upright position — the I-will-not-be-bullied stance. The posture adopted as a defense mechanism to ward off anyone who might take advantage. It looks confident from the outside. But the back muscles are squeezing, the shoulders are hiked up, compressing the neck, and the throat is just as tense as the hunched version.
Both of these postures are fear responses. And both of them make it nearly impossible for the voice to flow freely.
In this video, I walk you through what calm upright posture actually looks and feels like — and a simple practice to get there. Shoulder rolls, chest lift, chin up, jaw dropped, tongue anchored. And then the phrase that ties it all together:
I speak with ease.
If you've been holding either of these postures for years, it will take time to retrain the muscles. Be patient with yourself. This is athletic work, not a quick fix.
