In this keynote at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) 2026 Conference in London on the 23rd of June 2026, the immediate past Nigerian Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, confronts a defining question of our time: why are people losing faith in democracy, and what must be done to restore it?
Prof. Osinbajo traces how the post–Cold War promise - freedom unleashing innovation, innovation creating prosperity, prosperity strengthening democracy, has frayed across continents. He points to declining trust in institutions, widening inequality, political polarisation, and a growing sense that many, especially young people, have been left behind by globalization and technological change.
Nowhere is this crisis more consequential than in Africa, where persistent poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and underdevelopment have fueled frustration, and in some places, support for military coups. He highlights structural constraints: exorbitant borrowing costs, unsustainable debt, and the disproportionate burden of climate change on a continent that contributes minimally to global emissions.
At the heart of today’s uncertainty is artificial intelligence. Prof. Osinbajo warns that AI, citing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's assertion, could erase up to 50,000 entry-level white-collar jobs in five years, deepen inequalities, and challenge democratic control if governance lags behind capability. He calls for an inclusive global framework for AI, not just self-regulation by tech companies.
His roadmap for renewal is clear:
Reconnect freedom with tangible prosperity and opportunity.
Treat health, climate resilience, knowledge, cybersecurity and AI governance as global public goods.
Reform the international financial architecture for fairer and cheaper capital.
Defend the rule-based order as a balance of power and principle.
Ensure the benefits of technology are broadly shared.
Beyond institutions, he argues the crisis is moral and human: strong societies need trust, responsibility, empathy, and solidarity. “If the modern order is to renew itself, it must recover not only its institutions, but also its very soul.”
A must-watch for citizens, policymakers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and anyone concerned with the future of democracy, Africa, and AI.
