A live full band version of "I Am Mine", one of our favorite songs from Sparrow's solo record, Carolina Mountains. The stripped down album version is a fiddle and banjo duet. Curious to hear what folks prefer! Let us know what you think. We recorded this one lovely August morning on our front porch. Crazy to think that this is our first summer on this porch! We just finished the house last November. Sparrow Smith- vocals, banjo Keith Josiah Smith- guitar Kristen Harris- fiddle Cam Covello- bass and video This song is about the constant process of figuring out who we are, as individuals, and in the context of our relationships and communities. It grapples with motherhood, partnership and marriage, career, and the literal tangle of vines and temperate rainforest nature that closes in on our little homestead if we stop caring for our space for even a brief moment of time. It's for everyone who has had to balance individual needs and desires with what the rest of the world wants and needs from us. And for everyone who has to work hard, when the world values effortlessness. Dark is the back of my mind I can't see what is there for me to find Blank ain't the slate of me soul I can't hold on, and I can't let go Black is the portal of birth Pain shows us what this life is worth Cold Cracks the cover and now We have leaves covering the ground Tangle of bitter vines What are you trying to hide Say it, sing it, softly speak it I am mine Bare is the ground that we've disturbed Toil it don't pay, haven't you heard? Ease is the sought after sound What do we do with this fallow ground? No is the nail that I can't drive Service the way that I've survived Now I can't see where I end And where you begin Tangle of bitter vines What are you trying to hide Say it, sing it, softly speak it I am mine banjo , clawhammer , fiddle , violin , old time , appalachian , psych folk , guitar , appalachia
