In 2 Corinthians 3:7, Paul calls something "the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones." Most readings stop at the Ten Commandments and move on. In this study, Jack Scott argues that the phrase is a synecdoche — a part standing for the whole — and that Paul is describing the entire old covenant system in the process of passing away. Working back through 2 Corinthians 1–3 and then forward into chapter 4, the study traces one unbroken argument: the death Paul keeps returning to is covenantal separation from God, not biology, and the life he promises is covenantal restoration accomplished at the second appearing of Christ in AD 70.
Key teachings in this study:
• Paul's "we versus you" theme — why the apostles occupy a unique position in the 40-year transition between covenant worlds, and why that distinction unlocks 2 Corinthians 4:12
• The Bible as one problem-and-solution story: death entering in the first garden, death abolished in the second (Genesis 1–3 to Revelation 21–22)
• The Spirit given as a guarantee — of what, and when the guarantee was to be redeemed
• Why "the ministry of death engraved on stone" represents far more than the Decalogue
• The glory fading from Moses' face as a picture of an age in the process of passing away
• Hebrews 8:13 and the question of whether the old covenant ended at the cross, at Pentecost, or at the destruction of Jerusalem
• "Death is working in us, but life in you" — why this verse collapses under a biological reading
• Hebrews 11:39–40 and the generation that was bringing the promise to completion
