牡丹 (BOTAN) is one single peony bloom seen close, under a soft overcast sky. Dozens of petals stand in ring after ring around one and the same middle, and each ring is plainly larger than the ring inside it. Every petal belongs to that one middle. And the middle itself is empty: there is a small open hollow at the very centre with no petal in it at all. Nothing has come loose and nothing has fallen — no petal has left its ring, and no petal has moved into the middle. Deep rose within dark green, the leaves behind falling away into soft dark depth, and a small patch of moss along the bottom where nothing is happening. Many around one, and the one they are around holding nothing.
One hour of Japanese zen ambience for stress relief, anxiety and healing. Ring after ring stands around one middle, and no petal is in the middle, and shakuhachi keeps every ring around that same middle while the middle itself stays empty. Dozens of petals, each ring larger than the one inside it. Piano takes the outer rings and koto takes the inner ones, the middle untouched, the level staying the same. Nothing has come into the middle, and not one petal has come loose. Deep rose within dark green, ring after ring, nothing at the centre. Every petal belongs to the same middle, and none of them is in it. Shakuhachi returns to the same middle as before, unhurried, still open. One long string tone lies around all the rings, none of them at the centre. Not one ring leaves the middle, and not one ring fills it. Sparse, minimal, quiet, still — many petals, one empty middle.
It is made for anyone carrying tension, worry or a mind that will not settle — something to sit with while the body lets go of what it has been holding.
▸ Best played quietly, and for a long time. Nothing here is asked to fill the middle.
