霜柱 (SHIMOBASHIRA) is bare winter earth seen from very close and very low, in the first low sunlight of the day. Thousands of thin white columns of ice stand straight up out of the ground, packed side by side, each one made of many fine parallel fibres with the light running down inside it. Resting on top of them, carried clear of the ground, are the same crumbs of dark earth that lay there before — each crumb level and undisturbed, exactly as it lay. Not one of them has stirred of its own accord, and yet every one of them is higher than it was, because the thin things beneath it are each a little longer than before, and no two of them the same length. All the motion is underneath. Above there is none at all. Warm ochre earth and silver white, tawny grass on the bank behind, a narrow band of pale blue along the top. One hour of Japanese zen ambience for study, reading and exam focus. Nothing above moves of itself, and everything below grows upward. Shakuhachi keeps the upper part still and the lower part longer than before. There is no movement in what is above. Piano stays above without moving and koto stays below where all the movement is, the level staying the same. Countless thin ones stand under one, each a different length, and the one above them is carried without moving. Silver white under pale blue, everything under it longer. Shakuhachi returns, the same one above as before, unhurried, still higher than before. One long string tone lies over many thin ones, none of them the same length. Not one of them stirs above, and not one below stays as it was. Sparse, minimal, quiet, still — nothing above moving, everything below longer. It is made for long stretches of reading, revision and study — something steady to keep in the room while the work gets done. ▸ Best played quietly, and for a long time. Nothing above it has to move. ▸ The whole series — MA 間:    / @ma.zen.ambience   ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 0:00 I. Nothing Above Moving Of Itself, Everything Below Growing Upward 4:51 II.
