Episode 6: The New Rules of Space and Motion
Galileo’s transformations work beautifully at ordinary speeds.
But once the speed of light must remain the same for all inertial observers, the classical rules are no longer enough.
In this episode, we explore the mathematical framework that connects space and time in Special Relativity.
We explore:
• why Galilean transformations assume universal time
• why those transformations work when v ≪ c
• the Lorentz transformation
• how space and time coordinates become connected
• why t′ is no longer generally equal to t
• how Lorentz transformations reduce to Galilean transformations at low speeds
• why classical velocity addition fails near c
• the relativistic velocity-addition law
• why light remains at c for every inertial observer
• a worked light-speed example
• a massive-object example:
0.7c combined with 0.8c gives approximately 0.962c, not 1.5c
• how the classical rule reappears at everyday speeds
The relativistic velocity-addition law is:
u = (u′ + v) / (1 + u′v/c²)
This new rule preserves the central requirement of Special Relativity:
light remains at speed c for all inertial observers.
The episode ends by asking:
If motion can change the frequency we receive from sound, what happens when the wave is light?
That takes us to Episode 7:
“Reading Motion in Light.”
