When Enoch asks why, he is told: "They have gone to measure." The angel beside him explains that the cords are for the righteous, and lists what they do: they bring the measures of the righteous, bring the ropes to them so they can lean and not fall, gather the elect to dwell together, are given to faith, and reach even those lost to the desert, the beasts and the sea. This chapter belongs to the Parables of Enoch (chapters 37–71), the one section of the book never found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It survives complete only in Ge'ez, kept by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. We read it slowly in R. H. Charles's 1917 translation, beside the measuring scenes of Ezekiel 40, Zechariah 2 and Revelation 11 and 21, and follow the cords nine chapters forward, to the one person the book shows being measured first. Every quotation is given with chapter and verse so you can check it yourself. 📌 In this video: 📌 The five words Enoch hears: "They have gone to measure" (1 Enoch 61:1–2) 📌 Why this chapter survived only in Ethiopia 📌 The rope brought to the righteous, and the staff of Enoch 48 📌 Zechariah's measuring line and the city too full for walls 📌 Why being measured here is not the same as being judged (Amos 7, Daniel 5, Enoch 61:8) 📌 Stars weighed by their light (Enoch 43) and the people John is told to measure (Revelation 11) 📌 The lost of the desert, the beasts and the sea (Enoch 61:5, 51:1, Revelation 20:13) 📌 Who was measured first (Enoch 70, Genesis 5:24, John 14:2) ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 "They have gone to measure" 01:05 The chapter only Ethiopia kept 02:33 The cords (Enoch 61:1–2) 05:01 The rope brought to you (Enoch 61:3) 07:09 Dwelling with the elect (Enoch 61:4) 09:32 Measured is not judged 11:18 Given to faith (Revelation 11, Enoch 43) 13:12 The lost will return (Enoch 61:5) 15:45 Who was measured first (Enoch 70) 19:53 Until the next scroll 💬 Which one stays with you: the rope in verse 3, the lost returning in verse 5, or the place measured for Enoch in chapter 70? 📚 Sources 1 Enoch, transl.
