2005 Worlds Men's SP & FS (ESPN) – Moscow | Stéphane Lambiel Wins First World Title

Summary: The men’s event at the 2005 World Championships in Moscow was thrown wide open when three-time defending World Champion Evgeni Plushenko withdrew with a severe groin injury before the free skate. With the Russian favourite out, 19-year-old Stéphane Lambiel of Switzerland seized his opportunity. Already the surprise leader following qualifying, Lambiel won the short program with a superb performance highlighted by a triple Axel, quad toe–triple toe combination and his trademark spins. Brian Joubert finished narrowly behind him in second, with Jeffrey Buttle third and Evan Lysacek fourth in the short program. The free skate proved unpredictable. Johnny Weir, competing with an injured foot, fought through his program to remain in contention, while Canadian champion Buttle overcame a fall on his opening triple Axel and other errors, his exceptional skating skills and strong component scores helping him climb into medal position. Reigning World silver medallist Joubert then saw his title opportunity disappear in a mistake-filled performance, finishing only 13th in the free skate and tumbling to sixth overall. That left Lambiel with the championship in his hands. Despite opening his free skate by popping a planned triple Axel into a single, he immediately recovered with a quad toe–triple toe and later landed a second quad toe, combining the difficult jumping with the exceptional spinning that had become his signature. Lambiel won the title with 262.46 points, ahead of Buttle on 245.69, while 19-year-old Lysacek completed the podium with 239.29 in his first appearance at the senior World Championships.
