Summary: The men’s original (or short) program at the 1990 World Championships in Halifax produced a remarkably strong display of jumping, with the emerging generation pushing the technical standard alongside established stars. Canada’s Michael Slipchuk opened the coverage with one of his strongest international performances, while 17-year-old Elvis Stojko impressed with an aggressive, clean skate. Soviet teenager Viacheslav Zagorodniuk and 18-year-old U.S. champion Todd Eldredge then raised the difficulty further, with Eldredge landing a triple Axel–triple toe combination and a second triple Axel. Christopher Bowman followed with a more mature and theatrical performance, while Petr Barna’s mistakes proved costly. The decisive battle came between defending world champion Kurt Browning and European champion Viktor Petrenko. Browning delivered enormous triple Axels and intricate footwork, but a small error on his double Axel left an opening. Petrenko answered with a superb triple Axel–triple toe combination and another triple Axel, earning 5.9s across the board for technical merit and two 6.0s for artistic impression. He won the original program ahead of Browning and moved into the overall lead after the compulsory figures. The video also includes a historical look at the compulsory figures, which were being contested at the World Championships for the final time. The footage includes Jill Trenary, Natalia Lebedeva, Midori Ito and Lisa Sargeant before showing the final compulsory figure ever skated at a World Championship. --- VHS60fps (noisy picture signal source), Canadian coverage (commentators: Toller Cranston, Ted Reynolds). The 1990 World Figure Skating Championships were held at the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Canada from March 6 to 11.
