Another killer bass cover, man! “You Looking at Me, Looking at You” is one of those badass old-school Ozzy deep cuts that makes the hardcore Ozzy freaks go, “HELL YEAH, you actually know THAT one!” This ain’t “Crazy Train” for the 900-millionth time. This is some buried Blizzard-era treasure from when Ozzy, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake were cooking up some seriously heavy magic. The bass line is pretty damn straightforward for most of the tune—nothing ridiculously insane—but don’t get too comfortable, because Bob Daisley sneaks some tricky little moves in there that’ll bite your ass if you start sleepwalking through it. That’s what makes it so much fun to play. You can lock into that nasty old-school groove, crank the bass up, bang your damn head and just let that sucker rip. What makes this song even cooler is that a lot of us Ozzy maniacs didn’t even know the damn thing existed for years! It came straight outta the original Blizzard of Ozz sessions, but it never made the original album. Instead, they stuck it on the B-side of “Crazy Train.” So unless you were the kind of hardcore vinyl freak digging through every Ozzy single you could get your grubby metal paws on, this sucker could fly completely under your radar. Years later, when it started showing up more widely on reissues, it was like somebody cracked open an old Ozzy vault and said, “Yo, check out this badass shit you missed!” And this wasn’t some leftover piece of crap they banged out after the good songs were finished, either. This sucker goes right back to the birth of the Blizzard of Ozz band. It was one of their early demos alongside “Crazy Train,” “I Don’t Know” and “Goodbye to Romance.” That’s some sacred Randy Rhoads-era metal history right there. Bob Daisley is the monster holding down the low end, and that dude deserves some serious respect. He wasn’t just some hired bass-slinger standing in the shadows behind Ozzy. Daisley was a major piece of the songwriting machine, and he says the title and basically the lyrics to this tune came from him. Underneath all the killer riffs, the song is really about two people watching their relationship go down the crapper because neither one will open their damn mouth and communicate. They’re looking at each other, still feeling something, but nobody’s saying what needs to be said. Hence, “You Looking at Me, Looking at You.” And Daisley sure as hell didn’t crawl outta nowhere. The Australian-born bass beast had already been around the block before hooking up with the Prince of Darkness. He played with Chicken Shack, Mungo Jerry and Widowmaker, and then Ritchie freakin’ Blackmore recruited him into Rainbow in 1977. That put Daisley in there with Ronnie James freakin’ Dio and Cozy freakin’ Powell! He played on Rainbow’s Long Live Rock ’n’ Roll, so the dude already had serious heavy-rock blood pumping through his veins before Ozzy came calling. Then Daisley hooked up with Ozzy in 1979, Randy Rhoads entered the picture, Lee Kerslake came smashing in on drums, and BOOM—one of the most legendary lineups in heavy-metal history was born. Ozzy howling up front, Randy throwing lightning bolts out of that guitar, Daisley rumbling underneath it all and Kerslake beating the living hell outta those drums. THAT’S the good shit! That’s why I wanted to cover this one. Forget playing only the obvious hits everybody and their grandmother knows. Give me the weird B-sides, the forgotten tracks, the buried gems and the dusty old metal treasure hiding in the vault! “You Looking at Me, Looking at You” is pure early-Ozzy goodness—a killer Randy Rhoads-era deep cut, a deceptively fun Bob Daisley bass line, and one badass little chunk of heavy-metal history. CRANK THAT SHIT UP AND LET THE BASS RUMBLE! 🤘🤘🤘
