What did ancient humans do when it rained all week? Without waterproof jackets, modern homes, or weather forecasts, days of relentless rain could turn survival into a serious challenge.
For prehistoric hunter-gatherers, wet weather meant more than getting uncomfortable. Cold, rising water, difficult travel, and scarce food could make leaving shelter dangerous. Keeping a fire alive and protecting the group became essential.
But what happened when people had to stay put? Archaeological discoveries offer clues. At Qesem Cave, researchers found evidence of repeated activity around a central hearth. At Blombos Cave, ancient people prepared ochre mixtures, while finds from Sibudu Cave reveal carefully made plant bedding with insect-repelling leaves. Bone needles and fiber-working tools show how prehistoric people developed ways to make clothing and cordage. And research among the Ju/’hoansi suggests that firelit evenings could become important times for storytelling and social connection.
We cannot prove that cave paintings, rope-making, or every craft activity happened specifically on rainy days. But the evidence reveals what people could do when conditions kept them close to shelter.
Discover how ancient humans managed bad weather—and how time spent preparing, repairing, and sharing knowledge could help them face the next clear day.
