Stargate SG-1: The Sci-Fi Hit Stargate's Creators Were Locked Out Of

Stargate SG-1, Stargate, Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver, Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin, Kurt Russell, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files, and the Sci Fi Channel all come together in this deep dive into the real story of how a one-off movie became a ten-season sci-fi empire. In 1994, Stargate set an October box office record. But before it even opened, its nervous backers had sold off the rights, and the men who created it never got to make their planned trilogy. Instead, MGM turned it into a TV show without them, cast the star of MacGyver, and put it on a premium channel most of America didn't pay for. This video tells the story of how Stargate SG-1 survived a cancellation, a network switch, and the loss of a lead actor, won the real backing of the US Air Force, outlasted The X-Files, and built a franchise that Amazon greenlit and then cancelled in 2026, three decades later. Whether you watched it on Sci Fi Friday or you're discovering it for the first time, this is the story behind the gate. #Stargate #nostalgia #tvdocumentary
