Yangmatou Cultural Creative Park in Shashi sits on the east bank of the Jingjiang stretch of the Yangtze River. It took its name from its days as a treaty port in the late Qing Dynasty, when foreign trading firms and piers clustered along the shore. Today it stands as a riverside memory corridor that weaves together a century of old commercial port history and the warm everyday riverside life of modern times.
For over a hundred years, the ebb and flow of the river tides has layered the everyday riverside memories of generations of Shashi locals deep into its ground.
The old brick embankment along the shore dates back to 1895, when Shashi was opened for foreign trade under the *Treaty of Shimonoseki*, becoming one of the earliest inland foreign trade ports on the middle Yangtze. The old factory buildings lining the river were once the home of the nationally famous Vitality 28 detergent plant, whose iconic “one-to-four” advertising jingle spread across the whole country on river breezes decades ago. Today, old warehouses have been converted into riverside tea houses, and old workshops now house trendy commercial spaces — half the shore holds the old look of the treaty port era, the other half carries the bright, new vitality of modern everyday life.
Filming the street scenes and everyday sounds of this place today is to leave a warm trace of the old riverside days for locals who hold nostalgia for old times, and to preserve the vibrant present of this park for generations yet to come.
The red brick walls of old warehouses catch the glow of sunset over the river, as calm and unhurried as they were over a hundred years ago. As long as the river wind over this old pier never fades, all the old stories of this old city will always have a quiet place to rest.
