An acting coach reacts to Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 3 — Victory of the Daleks — and I've gotta be honest, I've got some issues with this one.
Look — I really loved episode two. I loved the glimpses we got into the Doctor's character. This one? Something's off. The tone is all over the place, the editing feels erratic, and when the Doctor slaps the dish out of the Dalek's hand, watch Amy's face. He's been so gentle with her. She's never seen him like this. I don't think I ever saw Rose look at the Doctor that way.
As an acting coach, this is what kept nagging me: the shield-down moment plays like someone's going to die, and then thirty seconds later the Doctor is bubbly and up again. Matt Smith is doing what's on the page — this isn't a performance problem. It feels like an editing problem, maybe a shooting-out-of-sequence problem. I hope this isn't going to be a Moffat-era thing.
The best analytical beat for me was actually Bracewell. The Doctor reaches for family, tragedy, and loss to make him remember he's alive — because those are the Doctor's core experiences of being alive. Amy reaches for romantic love because she's young and in her early 20s and love is still magical. That's beautifully in character for both of them. And that line — he needs people, he needs someone, he would be lost — the Time Lord Victorious was only the tip of the iceberg.
Longtime Whovians: does this tonal inconsistency get ironed out, or is it a Moffat-era pattern? And on Amy — was she too brash, too fast, after Rose, Martha, and Donna?
