Subtracting fractions with the same denominator, with Hash Brown the owl! Last time we found that 5/8 is bigger than 3/8. Today: how MUCH bigger? The one skill: take away the tops, keep the bottom. Lift pieces out of the bar: the cuts never move, so the pieces are still the same size. Never take the bottoms away too: 7/8 - 3/8 is 4/8, not 4/0. "How much bigger?" is a take-away sum (Chomp the crocodile helps). Taking away from one whole: 1 = 8/8, so 1 - 3/8 = 5/8. Hundredths on a hundred square, and checking by adding it back. Pause and predict at each "Your turn!". For Year 5 (Australian Curriculum AC9M5N05).
