It is refusal — the world will not rearrange itself to suit you — and checking, that others can go and look and come back agreeing. The inner world passes refusal outright. You cannot decide to find a joke funny, or will yourself to believe, or love to order, or make grief shorter by disapproving of it. It differs only in how far you must travel to compare notes. There is the province you can point at, and the province you can only describe, to someone who has been there. Which makes the old mythologies something other than fiction. The shadow, the threshold, the descent, the judge, the child, the mountain — surveyed independently by cultures that never traded a word, and still landing on you tonight. Physics is the map of the province we can point at. The myths, and the long strange literature of the contemplatives, may be the maps of the one nobody can. Same field, two coastlines, and a loop sitting exactly on the border. Long, soft, and speculative. Nothing to solve, and no verdict at the end.
