Health and wellbeing in the early years is made up of three connected areas: physical health, mental wellbeing and emotional security. This lesson explains how nutrition, hygiene, movement, sleep and freedom from illness support children’s energy, concentration and development. It also explores mental wellbeing, including confidence, curiosity, enjoyment of learning and the ability to cope with feelings such as frustration or anxiety. Emotional security is considered through children’s sense of safety, trust and secure relationships with consistent, caring adults. You will learn how these areas overlap in everyday practice. For example, a child who is tired, hungry or unwell may find it harder to participate, manage feelings or build relationships. The lesson highlights the practitioner’s role in providing healthy routines, active play, responsive communication, positive interactions, careful observation and opportunities for children to express themselves safely. It also emphasises working with families so that care remains consistent between home and the early years setting.
