Transcribed by @itsRemco & @midiverse.official Spring Is Here appears on Portrait In Jazz, the landmark 1960 album from the Bill Evans Trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. This jazz piano Synthesia video pairs falling notes with the double bass so you can follow both voices. Evans had just come off recording Kind of Blue with Miles Davis, and his impressionist harmony glows through every chorus of this ballad. In 1958 he joined Miles Davis, and his impressionist harmony shaped Kind of Blue, still the best-selling jazz album ever made. Leading his own trio from 1959 with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, he rewrote the rules of the format: rather than bass and drums accompanying a soloist, all three players conversed as equals. The 1961 Village Vanguard sessions that produced Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby capture it perfectly, recorded days before LaFaro was killed in a car accident. Evans's rootless voicings are now the standard vocabulary of jazz piano - if you have learned modern voicings, you have learned from him. Introspective and harmonically rich: rootless left-hand voicings in close intervals, letting the bass supply the roots, under a singing, rhythmically independent right-hand line. Frequent block chords and impressionist colours borrowed from Debussy and Ravel. Soft touch, flexible time inside a firm pulse. 🎹 TURN ANY PIANO RECORDING INTO MIDI Want to learn this piece — or any recording — with falling notes like in this video?
