Erroll Garner's No Moon, also known as Young Love, is a dreamy 1950 jazz piano ballad rendered here with Synthesia falling notes. Garner never learned to read music, yet the self-taught Pittsburgh pianist became one of the most distinctive voices in jazz, composing the standard Misty and selling over a million copies of Concert by the Sea. His lush ballad style is perfect for studying rich chord voicings note by note. Grab the midi below and treat the falling notes as your jazz piano tutorial.

🎼 ABOUT ERROLL GARNER
Erroll Garner (1921-1977) grew up in Pittsburgh, started picking out tunes at three, and never learned to read music - he played entirely by ear his whole life, which makes his output the more remarkable. He wrote "Misty" in 1954, working it out in his head on a flight, and it became one of the most recorded ballads in the American songbook. His 1955 live album Concert by the Sea sold more than a million copies and made him one of the very few jazz pianists with genuine mass popularity. Audiences loved the rambling, teasing introductions that hid the identity of the tune until the last possible second, and the happy grunting that came with them. He is among the most instantly recognisable stylists in jazz, and his approach gives students a wonderfully physical, orchestral way of thinking about the keyboard.
Unmistakable: the left hand strums full chords on every beat like a rhythm guitar while the right plays the melody in shimmering block chords, deliberately lagging a fraction behind the beat. Lush orchestral textures, big tremolos, and playful rubato introductions before the tempo finally locks in.
