Phone addiction is not fixed by willpower. It is fixed by rules. The average smartphone user scrolls 78 miles a year, three marathons of thumb movement, and most of us cannot remember a single reel we watched yesterday.
In Part 2 of the PanLab podcast series on phone addiction, psychologist Akansha moves from the problem to the recovery plan. First she dismantles the excuse we all use: 'main toh educational content dekhta hoon'. Motivational videos, exercise videos, finance reels: agar unse life badalti, toh ab tak badal chuki hoti. Exercise ke video dekhne se exercise nahi hoti. Real learning takes effort and time, and no 30-second clip replaces that.
Then she lays out the three recovery protocols from social scientist Dr. Arthur Brooks:
1. Tech-free times. Three fixed windows every day with no phone, no laptop, no TV. The first hour after waking: use an actual alarm clock, go to the balcony or garden, get sunlight, let your circadian rhythm reset. Every meal: phone face-down on the table, eat and talk, let oxytocin do its job. The last hour before sleep: blue light from screens disrupts melatonin and your sleep cycle, which is why you fall asleep late and wake up tired. Dim yellow lights, family, partner, book.
2. Tech-free zones. One room in your house or office where no device is allowed, ideally the bedroom. Calls, messages and laptop stay outside the door.
3. Tech fast. 96 hours, four continuous days in a year, with zero technology. Alone, with friends, on a retreat, in a small village, wherever you can go offline completely.
If you do not want technology to use you, you have to decide when you use technology. These three rules are how you take that decision back.
Watch Part 1 first if you want the psychology behind the addiction: dopamine, numbing emotions, the vegging-out myth and why boredom is the price of focus.
