Shams of Tabriz: The Mysterious Teacher Who Transformed Rumi

In 1244, a wandering teacher arrived in Konya. His encounter with Rumi would become one of the most extraordinary friendships in the history of poetry. Who was Shams of Tabriz? This narrated introduction explores the man behind the legends: his travels, his demanding spiritual teaching, his relationship with Rumi, and his mysterious disappearance. Drawing attention to his Discourses and the differing accounts of early and later biographers, it considers what we can know—and what remains uncertain. At the centre of his teaching are love, direct experience, and devotion to the Prophet’s example. His story asks what happens when a teacher challenges everything we think we understand.
