Khwaja Abdullah Ansari’s Manazil al-Sairin, usually translated as The Stations of the Wayfarers, is one of the most influential maps of the Sufi path. Ansari imagines spiritual life as a journey made up of stopping places. Each station is a place where the seeker pauses, learns and then moves on. The book contains one hundred stations arranged across ten sections, beginning with awakening and ending with unity. Each station follows the same pattern. Ansari begins with a verse from the Quran, gives a concise definition, and then describes three degrees of the station, from the beginner to the most advanced seeker. The first station is awakening, yaqza, the moment when the heart wakes from heedlessness and begins to recognise God’s blessings, its own faults and the value of time. The path then moves through repentance, patience, trust, sincerity, humility, contentment, love, longing, intimacy and awe. The final station is tawhid, divine unity. By this point, Ansari’s language becomes extremely compressed and radical, which is one reason the book inspired so many later commentaries. #Ansari #ManazilAlSairin #Sufism #Tasawwuf #SufiPath #SufiClassics
