Lavonne Brummett is seventy-one. She lives in Paducah, Kentucky, down where the Ohio River meets the Tennessee. Her husband Harlan worked the river his whole life. Deckhand on the barges, then lock operator at the dam for twenty-nine years. He was not a talker. In fifty-one years of marriage he never once told her a thing he did not have to. And every night after dinner, for thirty-one years, he put on a brown canvas coat and walked out the door. Fifty minutes. Home by eight. He went in the rain. He went in January. He went the night after his own father's funeral. She asked him twice if she could come. Both times he said no. So she decided what it meant. She decided that fifty minutes a night was how much of her a man could take. Harlan died in March. Two weeks later she found a key in his coat pocket — one key, on a ring by itself, the edges worn smooth and round. It did not fit any lock in her house. And then, three weeks after the funeral, a woman she had never met called to ask if Harlan was all right. Because he had not come by.
