Rainey Petrosky is forty-seven. She lives in Akron, Ohio, and she has
four years left on her mortgage.
For eleven years she has worked for a company that buys medical debt
from hospitals. She makes between sixty and eighty calls a day. Her
name has been at the top of the board for most of those years.
She is very good at it. She knows exactly why she is good at it.
This story takes place on one Tuesday. It starts at 7:52 in the morning
and it ends at five o'clock.
At 10:40 she opened an account. One thousand eight hundred and forty
dollars. Forty dollars a month, nineteen payments, never missed.
The woman who answered was calm and polite and answered every question.
And then she asked Rainey a question instead.
This story is told slowly and clearly for English learners at Level 1
