Do you think the hardest part of a humanoid robot is AI, large language models, or chips? The surprising answer might be something much less glamorous: a precision reducer hidden inside its joints.
An electric motor can spin thousands or even tens of thousands of times per minute, but a robot’s joints need something very different — controlled speed, huge torque, extreme precision, and long-term reliability.
And making one reducer work is not the real challenge. The real challenge is producing hundreds of thousands or even millions of them, with every single unit performing consistently.
In this episode, we take apart the seemingly ordinary reducer and explore the mechanical systems, precision manufacturing, and supply chain behind humanoid robots — and why China’s robotics industry is becoming increasingly important.
The robot’s AI may be its brain. But its joints may be its real steel skeleton.
