Gardens of the Moon is where it starts. Erikson doesn't hold your hand. You land in the middle of an empire at war, with gods, mages and soldiers all moving at once, and you trust that it will come together. It does. Readers who stay with it often call it the best series they have ever read. At the center of it are the Bridgeburners, the Empire's most famous soldiers. Sergeant Whiskeyjack's squad has just crawled out of a siege that buried most of their company, and they are starting to suspect that someone in their own Empire wants them dead. Now they are being sent into Darujhistan, the last great free city, with an assassin, a mage who knows more than he lets on, two sappers with crates of explosives, and orders that look a lot like a death sentence. If you like soldiers who joke under pressure and look after each other when nobody else will, these are your people.
