Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi said he was “completely broken” by the lukewarm theatrical response to his latest film Batwara 1947. Speaking at a press conference after a special screening with religious leaders from different faiths, Santoshi said he had nurtured the film for 15 years and described it as his “spiritual penance”. Headlined by Sunny Deol and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the period drama is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and explores themes of violence, migration, love and communal harmony.
