On March 13, 2004, a property owner checked on a boarded-up house on Somerset Avenue near East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. Inside, he found the body of a forty-year-old woman named Naomi Fails. She had been stabbed multiple times. No one had reported her missing. No one had seen anything. No one had heard anything.
Cleveland detectives collected DNA from the scene and ran it through CODIS. No match. The investigation stalled within months. The case went cold. And for twenty-two years, nobody was ever charged, named, or connected to Naomi's murder.
Then, in 2025, the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's G.O.L.D. Unit (Genetic Operations Linking DNA) sent the decades-old crime-scene evidence to Othram, a forensic genetic genealogy lab in Texas. Using technology that didn't exist when Naomi was killed, Othram built a DNA profile from degraded evidence, traced it through public genealogy databases, and handed investigators a name they had never had before.
That name was Angelo Smith, 68, of Euclid, Ohio, living just twelve miles from the crime scene. A direct DNA sample confirmed the match. A grand jury indicted Smith on aggravated murder and murder charges. On August 11, 2026, he stood in a Cuyahoga County courtroom, pleaded not guilty, and was held on a $1 million bond.
In this documentary, we trace the full story: the abandoned building on a street the city had given up on, the neighborhood that was once called Cleveland's "second downtown" before decades of blight erased it, the CODIS dead-end that left the case frozen for two decades, the cold-case unit born from the sexual assault kit backlog crisis, the forensic science that can now pull identities from twenty-year-old evidence, and the question at the center of it all: what happens when a woman is killed in a building nobody remembers, in a neighborhood nobody is watching?
This is Cold Case Redemption. We tell the stories of the forgotten victims who finally received justice.
⚖️ LEGAL NOTE: Angelo Smith has been charged, not convicted. He has pleaded not guilty. The presumption of innocence applies fully until a jury decides otherwise. All allegations referenced in this video are based on publicly available court records and official statements.
