Salmon leave Lake Ontario and swim upstream through the Rouge River, driven by their instinct to return to spawning grounds and reproduce. Facing powerful currents and challenging obstacles, these remarkable fish repeatedly leap out of the water, struggling against the rushing flow. Even after being swept back, they continue their relentless journey upstream. Many of the salmon seen here are Chinook Salmon, originally native to the Pacific Ocean but now established in the Great Lakes. Unlike ocean-migrating salmon, these fish spend their adult lives in Lake Ontario before returning to freshwater streams to spawn. For Chinook Salmon, this is their final journey. After spawning, they die, completing an extraordinary life cycle that continues with the next generation.
