Why did methane levels in Earth’s atmosphere start rising again after years of relative stability?
Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, and its recent increase has raised important questions among scientists. Is this part of Earth's natural climate cycles, or is something else driving the change?
In this video, we explore the history of Earth's climate, ice cores, the Milankovitch cycles, methane sources, permafrost, wetlands, agriculture, fossil-fuel emissions, and the technology scientists use to detect methane from space.
We'll also look at why the methane increase after 2007 cannot simply be explained as the beginning of another natural ice-age transition and what this could mean for Earth's changing climate.
From ancient ice trapped beneath Antarctica to methane plumes detected by satellites, this is the story of one of Earth's most important greenhouse gases.
