The African wild dog pack in Linyanti, Botswana had just moved to a new den. We we arrived at the new site, the adults were off on their daily hunt and the pups were enjoying their new environment. It was such fun to watch their inter play. They were running around and all coming together to create a pile of African wild dog pups. A few would dash off casing lots of leaves to rustle before rejoining the pile. Suddenly, they all raced off into the bushes and the den. An amusing watch!
The African Wild Dog , also known as the African Painted Dog, is a highly endangered species. They are Africa’s largest canid and about the size of a domestic German Shepard. They are highly blotched with black, white and yellow-brown patches. They have large, dark rounded ears, a slender body with long legs. They are social and vocal animals, living typically in packs of around 10-15 individuals. They hunt in packs and are very successful hunters with about 70% of hunts ending in success. Once fed the adults and sub adults return to the den and regurgitate food for the alpha female and her pups.
