Cursum Perficio is the 12th studio album by the American thrash metal band Anthrax, scheduled for release on September 18, 2026 (via Megaforce in the US and Nuclear Blast in Europe). It is the group's first full-length record in ten years—since For All Kings (2016)—marking the longest gap between albums in their career.
The Latin title translates roughly to "My journey has come to an end," "My journey is over," or "I complete my journey." Charlie Benante explained that the phrase came from a plaque seen in a documentary about Marilyn Monroe (at her final home). The band clarifies that this is not necessarily their final album; they view the work as the culmination of everything they have learned throughout their career, rather than a definitive farewell. Scott Ian has noted that the group plans to tour extensively (for about two years) and then evaluate the future—possibly releasing only singles or new material, depending on how they feel.
The album was recorded primarily at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 (Northridge, Los Angeles) and produced by Jay Ruston (in collaboration with the band). The process spanned years—with recording beginning in 2023 and adjustments or the discarding of older material continuing into 2025–2026—resulting in a record the band describes as riff-driven and brutal.
The album blends Anthrax’s classic, nostalgic thrash sound (with nods to Among the Living, "Madhouse," and the energy of the 80s and early 90s) with bolder experiments, including atmospheric textures, near-black metal elements, mid-tempo grooves, and touches of doom and hard rock. Singles like "It’s For the Kids" deliver the aggression and mosh-pit energy typical of the band, while tracks like "The Edge of Perfection" demonstrate a desire to innovate after a 45-year career.
Pre-release reviews (such as the one from Louder/Metal Hammer) describe the album as solid and competent, featuring excellent moments and a blend of familiarity and experimentation, though not quite the monumental "showstopper" some had anticipated after a decade-long wait. It is viewed as a mature, serviceable effort that celebrates the band's journey without abandoning its thrash roots.
In short, Cursum Perficio is the long-awaited return of Anthrax: thrash with deep roots, nostalgic energy, and a few creative risks, all wrapped in a title that reflects the closing of a chapter.
