In this episode of Feel Free Again, host Cole James is joined by Renee Hill Carter — minister, author of What About Me?, and an advanced certified Grief Recovery Specialist — for an honest conversation about the grief the church so often walks around instead of through.
For years, Renee cared for grieving people in her congregation without the right tools. After the losses of her parents and sister, and the sudden death of her pastor in 2015, she watched her church choose to "move on" — everyone quietly walking around the same unspoken pain, Sunday after Sunday. That's when the landscape of grief opened up for her: the realization that loss is so much bigger than death, showing up in divorce, in broken relationships, and in the dozens of losses we carry across a lifetime. Drawing on decades in ministry and her life alongside her husband, a Vietnam veteran, Renee and Cole talk about the hidden grief carried by the families of veterans, why we tell people to forgive without ever telling them how, and what it means to finally include the caregiver in the equation.
Whether you're grieving a loss you haven't been able to name, caring for someone who is, or serving a community that needs a better way forward, this conversation is a gentle reminder that healing is possible — and you don't have to do it alone.
