For the good acquaintances would direct us to the proper Buddha path whilst the bad acquaintances deviated us to heresy. In matters both secular and spiritual, one is free from stinginess, and gives even one’s head, eyes, marrow and brain to others. … Sow seeds of goodness across the fields of merit, so that all beings may sprout the aspiration for Bodhi.” This sutra passage expounds the bodhisattva spirit of selfless giving. Like a great ship‑master, the bodhisattva carries suffering beings with great love across to the secure and warm other shore. This very bodhisattva aspiration is what tens of thousands of Tzu Chi volunteers have practiced in the world over the past sixty years. Brother Tan We-Chang has long dedicated himself to advancing Tzu Chi missions at the Tzu Chi Selangor-Kuala Lumpur Chapter.
