Plumber hourly pay looks simple until you compare the invoice with the paycheck. A customer may see a fast repair and a large bill, but the real life of a plumber also includes travel, estimates, supply runs, emergency calls and time that cannot be billed to anyone.
WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS:
• Nights, weekends and emergency plumbing calls
• A four- or five-year paid apprenticeship
• Licensing, experience and independent work
• The BLS median of $63,800 a year
• Why $30.67 an hour is not universal
• Vehicle, material and equipment costs
• The 15.3% self-employment tax
THE SHORT ANSWER:
What does a plumber make per hour? For an employee, the national median for the BLS occupation group that includes plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters was $63,800 in May 2025. Using a standard 2,080-hour work year, that is about $30.67 an hour before tax. It is a benchmark, not every plumber's paycheck.
The plumber salary story changes when the person owns the business. The invoice has to cover parts, the van, fuel, insurance, equipment, licenses and unpaid time between calls before it becomes profit. A self-employed plumber can control the price, but also takes on the work of estimating, scheduling, collecting payment and paying taxes.
The video follows a service-plumber day, from the first call through the paperwork after the repair, then separates plumber hourly pay from the number printed on an invoice. It also explains why the script's owner example is an illustration, not a universal take-home rate.
