This song appeared in the Hopetoun Courier in July 1915, titled 'The Dying Soldier: The Battle of Dardanelles': https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ar... The painting of the landing at Gallipoli is by Charles Edward Dixon: https://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/pain... The ANZAC campaign in the Dardanelles occurred around 1914-1915, so this was a contemporary song. https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/wars-a... With its anti-war tone, I can see why the song didn't become very popular, as far as I can tell, no one has recorded it. The text mentions that the tune should be 'On the Banks of the Clyde', most likely this one: https://mainlynorfolk.info/folk/songs... Here is the only recording I can find: https://open.spotify.com/track/0vuDLw... I am recording this because someone at the 'Return to Tipperary' conference came up and sang a bit of this song to me and asked if I had heard of it. I didn't recognize the tune or words, but a quick search on Trove turned it up. Would love to know if anyone in Australia recorded the song. This site suggests that Colin McJannett had a version of this in the 1970s: https://www.horntip.com/mp3/fieldwork... Purchase my music: Bandcamp: https://ozfolklounge.bandcamp.com/
