The high-priority spare parts have been delivered, the stranded Search and Rescue helicopter is spinning its rotors once again, and it's time to bring our Daher Kodiak 100, PH-BDN, back home. But a ferry flight is never just a ferry flight. Today, we’re carrying a highly time-sensitive payload on the return leg to Groningen Airport Eelde: the diagnostic equipment and the specialized engineering crew who just performed the emergency repairs. They are urgently needed back at their primary maintenance hub to prep for another incoming aircraft. Every hour this crew is away from base is an hour the fleet's readiness hangs in the balance. To steer clear of heavy commercial traffic delays over northern Germany, we’re taking a scenic, tactical detour to the north. "PH-BDN, cleared for takeoff, Runway 29." The PT6A turboprop roars to life one more time, pulling us up and away from the coast of Rønne. We leave the Baltic island behind and head northwest, leveling off into our cruising altitude of 8,000 feet. The late July skies clear up beautifully as we cross into Swedish airspace, giving us a stunning view out the right window of the golden fields of Skåne and the iconic Øresund Bridge stretching across the sparkling blue water toward Denmark. As we cross the Danish belts, the true test of the route begins—a long, isolated overwater stretch across the vast German Bight of the North Sea. Miles of open water pass beneath our hull until a solitary crimson fortress rises dramatically out of the waves: the red sandstone cliffs of Helgoland. The island's VOR station serves as our final maritime checkpoint. Banking the Kodiak left at the Helgoland beacon, we point our nose south toward the mainland. Crossing back over the Wadden Sea and the East Frisian Islands near Juist, the familiar flat, green landscapes of the Netherlands unfold below. We throttle back, beginning our smooth descent into the Groningen skies, perfectly on time to get this expert crew and their gear back on the hangar floor. *The mission is officially complete.
