v2.0 — Carrying Out The Plan Was Not The Plan

. [Verse 1] Bank vault open Night run red Two old cowboys laid half dead Smoke still rising from the door Money spilled across the floor One rolled over Coughed blood slow Looked at his brother in the afterglow And said— ⸻ [Chorus] Carrying out the plan Was not the plan If we’d known the real one We wouldn’t be here like this Flat on our backs Watching heaven go black Carrying out the plan Was not the plan ⸻ [Verse 2] The other laughed Took one last drink Said— Hell, friend I don’t think It mattered then Don’t matter now You’d still be bleeding anyhow The plan got done That much is true And now the plan’s got plans for you ⸻ [Chorus] Carrying out the plan Was not the plan We did the job Then the job did us Dust in our teeth Iron in our hands Carrying out the plan Was not the plan ⸻ [Bridge] You can finish the job And fail the point Cash the check Still break the joint Hit every mark Still miss the aim Win the whole damn thing And lose the name ⸻ [Final Chorus] Carrying out the plan Was not the plan That’s the joke That’s the wound That’s the hand Sun going down Whiskey and sand Carrying out the plan Was not the plan. Was not the plan.
