Athens around 420 BC, when the Parthenon was twelve years old and a forty-foot Athena of ivory and gold stood inside it. This documentary follows ordinary Athenians through their day and their year: at home behind mud-brick walls, in the Agora, in the Assembly and the jury courts, in the potters' quarter and at the loom, at school, on the farms of Attica and at the harbor of the Piraeus. It tells how a place smaller than Rhode Island, with no king, fed itself on imported grain, governed itself by a show of hands and paid for a ton of gold, and who was left out: women, resident foreigners and the slaves of the silver mines.
Clear narration over paintings, painted pottery, museum pieces, ruins and film from open archives. The whole story, told in order from start to finish.
