That favorite t-shirt with the collar that gapes open and goes wavy at the edge is not worn out, mija. The collar is a knit, and cotton has a memory. What heat and water taught it to forget, heat and water can teach it to remember, in about five minutes, with nothing you have to buy.
Today I show you the collar revival my mother did at the ironing board on Sunday nights, the same fix for the loose cuffs on your sweaters, and the stronger old cure for a whole shirt that has stretched a size.
In this video:
· Why collars stretch in the first place, and why it is almost never wear
· The one thing everybody skips that makes the fix hold
· Step 1 · Lay it flat, collar in its natural circle
· Step 2 · Damp the collar only, spray bottle or hot tap water
· Step 3 · Scrunch the ribbing back together like closing an accordion, and aim past the target
· Step 4 · PRESS the iron, do not slide it. Sliding drags the collar right back out
· Step 5 · Let it COOL FLAT. The cooling is what writes the new shape
· No iron? The hair dryer version, and why it beats the iron on sweater cuffs
· The whole-shirt cure: a deliberate HOT wash and HOT dry to steer the shrink instead of fearing it
· 3 honest caveats: this is a cotton fix, how to hear dead elastic in a collar, and why the habit was the real problem
· 3 free habits that keep every collar in your house alive for years
What you need: water, an iron, a flat surface. That is the whole list. A spray bottle and a hair dryer help. Nothing bought.
