Carton was the family ancestral home dating back to the Norman invasion on Ireland. Maurice Fitzgerald the first member of the family received this land due to his support of that invasion (the winners write the history!) Lord Edward spent much of his early years in Frescati House in Blackrock, County Dublin, this was the family's 'town house'. He was educated by a private tutor with the understanding that he would follow a military career in the British Army. His highest rank was Major. He enjoyed exploration and through that, he was able to understand that he was born in to a family that did not support equality, he travelled across parts of Canada crossing in to the Unitef States. reaching New Orleans. This was around 1786. On his return home, he was a follower of the Whigs (Labour in UK). He was a leader of the United Irishmen Protestants and Catholics who wanted an Irish Republic. He died from injuries received when arrested.
