In late 1989, the writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation walked into a production meeting with no script, and a shooting date that had just been moved up. Four writers split the teleplay over Thanksgiving weekend, the final draft landed three days before cameras rolled, and the staff was convinced it would be a disaster.
Instead, "Yesterday's Enterprise" became one of the most celebrated episodes in Star Trek history. This video follows the calendar and the money behind it: Michael Piller's open-door policy for spec scripts, two fan pitches merged into one story, the actor scheduling crunch that pulled the shoot forward, the February sweeps budget bump, the recycled sets and props that saved money, the alternate-timeline loophole that got a darker Enterprise past Gene Roddenberry, and the post-production fix behind the episode's most famous transition.
