What happens when your double-leg takedown fails and your opponent sprawls and a scramble ensues? Coach Viet Ta of Cloud Nine MMA shows how to turn the scramble into a calf slicer submission. Starting from the failed double leg, Coach Viet uses wrist control and a sit-out as his opponent circles toward his back. From there, he rolls forward and uses the scramble to trap the leg, establish a figure-four and isolate the hips before attacking the calf slicer. He also explains an important finishing detail: controlling the toes instead of the shin to make it harder for your opponent to extend the leg and escape. A failed takedown doesn’t always mean the attack is over. Sometimes the scramble creates your next opportunity.
